Overview

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, paired with an honorary consultant contract at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT). This role combines clinical leadership, research, and teaching, with a strong focus on clinical trials and advancing oncology research across Sussex.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) as Clinical Director.
  • Partner with the Sussex Cancer Centre, the Health and Care Research Partnership, and other regional stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of oncology research, including translational and clinical trials across solid and haematological malignancies.

BSMS is part of a robust interdisciplinary cancer research network, including the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC), University of Sussex, University of Brighton, and NHS Trust partners, driving forward impactful research and clinical innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead an independent research programme in clinical oncology, with a focus on trials and translational research.
  • Provide clinical leadership within the CTU and mentorship to academic and NHS colleagues.
  • Enhance oncology trial portfolios, including post-licensing and optimisation trials, across multiple tumour types.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supporting medical student education, placements, and Individual Research Projects (IRPs).
  • Engage with external organisations to strengthen clinical-academic networks and collaboration.

For Professorial candidates, demonstrate national and international leadership in research, innovation, and education, contributing to strategic planning and governance.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • CCT in Medical or Clinical Oncology with specialist training completed.
  • Proven experience in clinical trials and oncology research leadership.
  • Strong track record of research output and grant acquisition.
  • Ability to bridge clinical practice and academic research, supporting high-quality teaching.
  • Experience in mentoring and developing junior clinicians and researchers.
