About the Role
We are seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our Medical Retina team, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary group across four hospital sites within the Trust. In this role, you will help deliver high-quality, specialist medical retina services, ensuring patients receive exceptional clinical care across the organisation.
As a CNS, you will develop specialist knowledge, skills, and competence, which will be demonstrated through direct care, clinical leadership, and educational support to colleagues, patients, families, and carers. This is a developmental role supported by a team of experienced Medical Retina Practitioners and Specialist Nurses, offering structured training and competency-based supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver intravitreal injection treatments in accordance with clinical protocols and NICE guidelines (following full training and competency assessment).
- Conduct post-operative cataract assessments under Service Lead direction, where appropriate.
- Support and contribute to the development and evaluation of medical retina services across the Trust.
- Educate and support patients, families, and staff with up-to-date clinical knowledge.
- Uphold safe, effective clinical practice as part of a wider multidisciplinary team.
- Support service delivery, resource use, and continuous improvement through audit and data analysis.
- Deliver training and educational programmes to health care staff and patients.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Registered professional (NMC, GOC, or HCPC)
- Post-registration CPD or qualifications (e.g., ENB 346, OCCCF, Medical Retina Certificate) or equivalent experience with willingness to undertake further training
- Significant experience at Band 5 level or equivalent in ophthalmology or medical retina
- Evidence of revalidation and professional development
- Confident managing complex caseloads and prioritising care needs
- Skilled in slit lamp anterior segment examination and OCT interpretation
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Comfortable working under pressure and across multiple clinical sites
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Non-medical or supplementary prescriber qualification (or willingness to train)
- Experience administering intravitreal injections
- Advanced skills in fundoscopy and Goldman Tonometry
- Experience leading service improvement or change management initiatives
- Patient advocacy experience
