About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced IP & Commercialisation Manager to lead the development and delivery of a portfolio of enterprise and innovation projects within the University of Sussex.
You will play a key role within the Innovation and Business Partnerships team, delivering a high-quality intellectual property (IP) service to academic staff and students. Your responsibilities will include:
- Advising on intellectual property rights (IPR), including patents, copyrights, and trademarks
Assessing new IP disclosures and identifying commercial potential
Conducting IP due diligence for research and collaborative projects
Developing and implementing IP exploitation and commercialisation strategies
Liaising with external patent attorneys and legal partners
Supporting negotiation of IP and commercial agreements
Delivering IP training and awareness sessions
Contributing to the successful commercialisation of research outputs
This role requires adherence to UK legal and regulatory frameworks, including:
About You
You are an enthusiastic and proactive professional with experience in intellectual property management and commercialisation, ideally within a UK university, research organisation, or industry setting.
You will bring:
- Knowledge of IP law or technology transfer (qualification or equivalent experience)
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
Experience managing multiple projects independently
Familiarity with IP databases, patent searching, and analysis
Experience in licensing, negotiations, and commercial deal-making
You should also understand relevant compliance and professional standards, such as:
- Business and innovation support
Data protection and confidentiality (UK GDPR)
Research governance and integrity principles
