About the Role

The History Department at the University of Sussex is seeking a talented and motivated Assistant Professor in European History since 1500 (excluding the history of the British Isles). This is a fixed-term academic appointment, offering the opportunity to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervise dissertations, and engage in research-led teaching in an internationally recognised department.

You will likely deliver modules such as:

  • The Early Modern World
  • The Making of the Modern World
  • Ideas of History
  • History of Emotions

There may also be opportunities to contribute to the MA History programme. Your teaching will include lectures, seminars, supervision, assessment, and marking, while engaging students in innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to European History.

About You

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Hold a PhD in European History since 1500, excluding the history of the British Isles.
  • Have expertise in one or more areas such as globalised European histories (early modern and modern) or histories of emotion.
  • Demonstrate substantial teaching experience in the UK HE sector.
  • Have an emerging publication record and strong communication skills.
  • Can supervise undergraduate dissertations and support students’ academic growth.
  • Are collaborative, approachable, and committed to team-oriented work.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate dissertations and contributing to curriculum development is advantageous.
