About the Role
This is an exceptional opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist specializing in child and adolescent mental health to join the South Durham CAMHS team. The postholder will actively contribute to service transformation and leadership, shaping the role to align with their clinical and professional interests.
You will provide assessment, management, and psychiatric care to children and young people up to 18 years, working closely with multidisciplinary teams including neurodevelopmental assessment, LD CAMHS, Eating Disorders, and Forensic CAMHS. Out-of-hours support is provided by the CAMHS Crisis Team, offering 24/7 crisis intervention and home treatment alternatives to inpatient admissions.
The Durham and Darlington Children and Young Peoples Service is based at the Acley Centre, Newton Aycliffe, serving a population of over 100,000, 25% of whom are under 18.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct mental health assessments, psychiatric evaluations, and holistic care planning for children and adolescents
- Manage referrals, follow-up care, and complex cases, including ADHD, ASD, Mood Disorders, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, Psychosis, Self-harm, Conduct Disorders, Tic Disorders, and Sleep Disorders
- Maintain close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and follow person-centered care pathways
- Participate in clinical audits, research, service evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training, and mentorship
Person Specification
Leadership & Service Development:
- Reflects on performance, acts on feedback, and demonstrates leadership within the multidisciplinary team
- Knowledge of NHS structure, management, and service improvement methodologies
- Ability to implement and adapt to service change
Clinical Knowledge & Skills:
- MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full GMC registration with licence to practice at the time of appointment
- Excellent knowledge of child and adolescent psychiatry using a bio-psycho-social approach
- Ability to manage complex cases and clinical uncertainty
- Knowledge of Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA) duties
Desirable Qualifications & Experience:
- MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification
- Approved Clinician Status and Section 12 (or ability to achieve within 3 months)
- Higher degree or qualification in medical education, research, or management
- Experience in clinical audit, service evaluation, and research publications
