Shape the Future of Older Persons Mental Health in Hampshire & Isle of Wight
Are you a compassionate, forward-thinking Psychiatrist passionate about improving mental health care for older adults? We are looking for an experienced Consultant in Older Persons Mental Health to join our inpatient teams at Gosport War Memorial Hospital — primarily on Rose Ward with occasional support on Poppy Ward (specialising in advanced dementia care).

Your Role & Responsibilities
As the Consultant Psychiatrist for Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH), you will:
Clinical Leadership
- Provide Responsible Clinician (RC) input for patients admitted to Rose Ward and support Poppy Ward as required.
- Lead high-quality, person-centred assessments, care planning and treatment for a small but complex caseload.
- Ensure robust risk assessment, effective clinical decision-making, and evidence-based treatment pathways.
Team Development & Education
- Supervise and mentor resident and specialty doctors.
- Contribute to teaching programmes and weekly academic sessions.
- Offer clinical and educational supervision to support workforce development.
Service Quality & Integration
- Play a key role in service improvement, clinical governance, and quality initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with community teams, carers, partner organisations and voluntary sector services to ensure seamless care transitions.
- Engage with multidisciplinary teams to strengthen care pathways across inpatient and community settings.
On-call and Flexible Working
Participate in the Trust’s network-wide on-call rota, with flexibility in job planning to support your professional interests — whether in education, research, leadership, or service innovation.
Protected Time
You will receive at least 2.5 supporting professional activities (SPAs) pro-rata, plus protected time for professional development, teaching and clinical leadership.

Required Qualifications & Registration
To be considered for this role, you must have:
Essential
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) — including a licence to practise (UK professional registration).

- MRCPsych or equivalent psychiatric qualification.
- Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of CCT at interview.
- Approved Clinician status under the Mental Health Act 1983 — Section 12(2) approval.

- This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
