Job Description
About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Technician to join a dedicated and collaborative technical team supporting teaching and research within the internationally respected Department of Meteorology. This is a hands-on, varied role that combines laboratory support, fieldwork, and direct engagement with students and researchers working at the forefront of atmospheric and climate science.
Based primarily at Earley Gate, you will support a range of specialist facilities, including the Reading University Atmospheric Observatory (RUAO)—one of the UK’s longest-running meteorological observation sites, providing near-continuous data since 1901.
Why This Role Is Important
Meteorological observation and analysis underpin national and global responses to climate change, extreme weather, and environmental risk. Your work will support research and teaching that aligns closely with UK public priorities and evidence-based policy, including those led by:
Met Office – national weather, climate, and atmospheric science
Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) – climate and environmental policy
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) – climate and environmental research funding
Office for National Statistics (ONS) – environmental and climate-related datasets
UK Visas and Immigration (Home Office) – Skilled Worker visa guidance
What You Will Do
Working as part of a close-knit technical team, you will support both day-to-day operations and longer-term teaching and research activity. Your responsibilities will include:
- Testing, installing, and maintaining meteorological instruments and data-logging systems, including liaison with service engineers and external suppliers
- Supporting teaching laboratories, ensuring equipment readiness, consumables management, safe waste disposal, and accurate stock control
- Delivering training and demonstrations on meteorological instrumentation and data systems to students and staff
- Providing technical support for off-campus field classes, residential courses, and outreach activities
- Contributing to shared maintenance of the RUAO site and grounds
- Participating in a rota to deliver daily meteorological observations
About You
This role will suit someone who enjoys practical technical work, problem-solving, and supporting learning and research in a scientific environment.
You will bring:
- Qualifications equivalent to HNC, NVQ Level 3, AS/A Level, or a basic professional qualification in a science, engineering, or mathematical discipline
(or a related degree such as Physical Geography with strong practical experience) - Hands-on experience with automated field sensors, remote monitoring, and data-logging systems
- Electronics workshop experience, including use of Arduino and Raspberry Pi platforms
- Working knowledge of Python and/or VBA for data handling or automation
- Fieldwork experience and a willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions
- A careful, methodical approach with strong attention to detail and safety
Visa and Right-to-Work Information
Due to the complexity of the Skilled Worker visa route, applicants who require sponsorship are advised to check their eligibility independently before applying. The University is unable to provide visa advice at application stage and will only discuss visa options with shortlisted candidates.
Guidance is available via UK Visas and Immigration
