About the Role
The University of Sussex is looking for a Research Finance Officer to support the financial lifecycle of research projects.
In this role, you’ll be involved from the very beginning of a project—setting up budgets and financial structures—through to its successful completion and closure. You’ll work alongside Senior Finance Officers and collaborate with colleagues across the Research and Innovation Division.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with numbers, systems, and people in a dynamic environment. Even if you haven’t worked in a university before, your transferable skills will be highly valued.
 Key Responsibilities
Your day-to-day work will include:
- Setting up financial records for new research and consultancy projects
- Managing project budgets and monitoring expenditure
- Raising invoices and processing financial transactions
- Posting journals and maintaining accurate financial data
- Supporting project reporting and ensuring compliance with funding requirements
- Working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders
 About You
You are detail-oriented, organised, and confident working with financial systems.
Essential skills:
- Strong financial literacy and understanding of accounting principles
- Experience with budgeting, invoicing, or financial administration
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Good communication skills for working with different teams
Bonus points if you have:
- Experience in project accounting or finance roles
- Knowledge of research funding or higher education finance systems
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills
- Most importantly, you’re eager to learn, adaptable, and able to apply your skills in a new setting if needed.
