Job Description
About the Institute
UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is a world-leading multidisciplinary centre dedicated to understanding and tackling dementia. With over 900 researchers, the institute investigates the biological, cellular, and systemic mechanisms driving neurodegenerative disorders. Our mission is to accelerate discoveries that improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
The Bourdenx Lab, led by Dr Mathieu Bourdenx, focuses on how age-related cellular decline contributes to neurodegeneration. Using spatial biology, single-cell analysis, and AI-assisted computational methods, the lab identifies molecular vulnerabilities and resilience mechanisms in ageing brains to uncover potential therapeutic targets.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Research Fellow to explore neuronal vulnerability to proteostasis collapse in ageing and dementia. This is a cross-disciplinary project combining wet-lab neuroscience with computational biology approaches.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Investigating how protein homeostasis networks are altered with age and disease
- Using spatial omics pipelines to map molecular signatures of proteostasis failure
- Identifying early markers of neuronal degeneration
- Working across multiple experimental models, including iPSC-derived neurons, mouse models, and human post-mortem tissue
- This position is funded by the Medical Research Council until 31 March 2027 (initially) and is available immediately.
Responsibilities
- Design and perform experiments in histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridisation, and microscopy
- Conduct molecular biology work, including RNA extraction and AAV vector design
- Apply scientific programming for bioinformatics and spatial biology analysis (Python and/or R)
- Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and maintain high standards of accuracy, reproducibility, and data integrity
- Contribute to publications, grant applications, and conference presentations
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have:
- A PhD (or near completion) in Neuroscience, Biology, Physiology, Medicine, or a related discipline
- Hands-on experience in histology, microscopy, and molecular biology techniques
- Competence in scientific programming (Python/R) and familiarity with version control
- Solid understanding of cell biology, neuroanatomy, and mechanisms of neurodegeneration
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently within a team environment
