About the Role
The University of Sussex is seeking a Research Computing Engineer to join its Digital Research Services team. This role supports researchers across the university in using advanced computing infrastructure and digital research tools.
You will play a key part in enabling high-quality research by providing technical expertise in areas such as High Performance Computing (HPC), cloud-based research environments, and large-scale data storage systems.
The role focuses on helping researchers solve technical challenges, optimise research workflows, and effectively use shared computing platforms to support data-intensive research across multiple disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
Research Computing Support
- Provide technical assistance to researchers using HPC systems, research cloud services, and storage platforms
Support data-heavy research workflows and computational applications across disciplines
Help users troubleshoot technical issues and optimise research computing performance
Systems & Software Engineering
- Install, configure, and maintain research software using automation and deployment tools
Contribute to the ongoing development and reliability of digital research services
Support system upgrades, improvements, and infrastructure maintenance
Technical Problem Solving
- Respond to escalated technical issues and provide effective resolutions
Assist researchers in adapting workflows to available computing environments
Diagnose and resolve software, system, and data-related challenges
Documentation & User Support
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation and user guidance materials
Support best practices in data handling, security, and research reproducibility
Collaborate with colleagues to document system requirements and service improvements
Candidate Profile
Essential Skills & Experience
- Background in computing, data science, engineering, or a data-intensive scientific discipline
Strong generalist technical skills across systems, tools, and computing environments
Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies in practical settings
Confidence working directly with researchers and technical colleagues
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
Personal Attributes
- User-focused approach with strong communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small technical team
Organised, adaptable, and proactive working style
Enthusiasm for supporting research through digital technology
Desirable Experience
- Familiarity with HPC environments, cloud computing, or Linux systems
Exposure to automation tools or scripting for software deployment
Interest in research computing, data science, or scientific computing workflows
