The History of Art Department at University College London (UCL) is recognised globally for its innovative research and teaching. Situated within the Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences, the department brings together scholars working across diverse artistic periods, geographies, and methodologies.
Research strengths include:
- Modern and contemporary art (c.1800 onwards)
Medieval and early modern visual cultures
Material and technical studies of art

The department was ranked first in London for Art and Design (History, Practice and Theory) in the REF 2021 assessment, reflecting its research excellence.

About the Role
UCL is seeking a Lecturer in Modern Art and Theory to join its dynamic academic team from 1 September 2026.
This role is ideal for a scholar with:
- A completed PhD in a relevant field
A strong publication record
A clear and ambitious research agenda
You will:
- Conduct high-quality, original research
Deliver engaging teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Contribute to curriculum development
Participate in academic leadership and departmental activities

About You
We are particularly interested in candidates who:
- Engage critically with modern art through innovative theoretical approaches
Explore global, cross-cultural, or interdisciplinary perspectives
Address social, political, or aesthetic questions within modern art histories
Contribute to current debates in art history and visual culture
Your work should complement and extend the department’s existing expertise.
