Job Description
Are you a qualified Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) ready for an exciting new opportunity in forensic mental health?
Join the team on Ash Ward, a dedicated 12-bed low secure inpatient unit at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. This specialist service provides a secure, supportive, and recovery-oriented setting for adult men who require expert forensic care due to mental health challenges combined with offending histories or risks to others. Our approach centres on thorough risk evaluation, harm reduction, personalised rehabilitation, and empowering individuals to reintegrate safely into the community.
In this rewarding Band 5 position, you’ll deliver compassionate, evidence-based nursing care while supporting patients on their path to recovery. You’ll collaborate closely with a skilled multidisciplinary team (MDT) to offer holistic assessments, interventions, and treatment plans tailored to each person’s needs.
We foster a collaborative, respectful environment where strong communication, empathy, and dedication to patient-centred care are at the heart of everything we do. As part of our close-knit team, you’ll help create positive experiences for both patients and colleagues.
We invest in your growth with plenty of opportunities for professional development, including in-house training, external courses, and ongoing support to build your skills and confidence.
The role involves full-time rotational shifts (including evenings, nights, and weekends), with occasional flexibility to assist other areas across the Trust when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Co-lead shifts alongside another RMN, ensuring safe, high-quality care delivery and smooth coordination with community services for effective admissions and discharges.
- Take responsibility for the clinical oversight of assigned patients, including assessing needs, planning and implementing care, and regularly reviewing progress.
- Mentor and engage junior staff and students in meaningful patient activities and therapeutic interventions.
- Closely monitor, document, and report any changes in patients’ mental state, physical health, or behaviour, escalating concerns promptly.
- Work in partnership with the MDT to deliver individualised, recovery-focused care plans.
- Act as a key worker for designated patients, maintaining strong therapeutic relationships.
- Administer medications safely in accordance with Trust policies and best practice standards.
- Apply relevant legal frameworks confidently, including the Mental Health Act, capacity assessments, consent, and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
- Support the Ward Manager and Clinical Lead in promoting high standards, meeting team goals, and upholding quality and safety targets.
