Job Description
Dowty, part of the global GE Aerospace organisation, is seeking an experienced Inspection & Certifying Staff Leader to lead its UK-based inspection and certification team at its Gloucester headquarters.
This is a senior operational quality leadership role responsible for ensuring that all inspection, certification, and manufacturing assurance activities comply with strict aerospace regulatory requirements, including CAA Part 21 standards.
You will play a key role in maintaining the highest levels of safety, quality, and compliance across manufacturing operations while driving continuous improvement and team capability development.
Role Overview
As Inspection & Certifying Staff Leader, you will lead a team of inspectors and certifying professionals responsible for verifying aerospace components and ensuring full regulatory compliance before release.
You will be accountable for maintaining inspection integrity, improving quality processes, supporting audits, and embedding lean manufacturing principles across inspection operations.
The role combines people leadership, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and continuous improvement within a highly regulated aerospace manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, manage, and develop a team of inspectors and certifying staff
Build capability through coaching, training, and structured development plans
Create succession planning strategies to ensure business continuity and resilience
Foster a strong safety culture and continuous improvement mindset across the team
Support hiring, onboarding, and long-term talent development
Inspection & Certification Governance
- Ensure all inspection and certification activities comply with CAA Part 21 regulations
Maintain compliance with aerospace quality standards such as AS9100 / ISO 9001
Apply and oversee inspection processes in line with AS9102 first article inspection requirements
Ensure accurate interpretation of technical drawings and manufacturing specifications
Maintain awareness of regulatory updates and implement required process changes
Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Promote and implement Lean manufacturing and daily management principles
Identify opportunities for process improvement and lead improvement initiatives
Conduct root cause analysis and drive corrective action to reduce Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ)
Ensure strong application of inspection methodologies and quality assurance practices
Support internal and external audits, including engagement with regulatory authorities
Operational Excellence & Decision Making
- Take ownership of inspection cell performance and operational outcomes
Make informed decisions aligned with business priorities and regulatory frameworks
Ensure effective use and development of business systems for inspection control
Support customer-focused quality delivery and operational efficiency improvements
Required Skills & Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- Relevant technical qualification or degree in engineering, quality, or operations
Experience in a manufacturing, aerospace, or engineering quality environment
Working knowledge of CAA regulations, especially Part 21
Strong understanding of AS9100 / ISO 9001 quality systems
In-depth knowledge of AS9102 inspection standards
Experience with Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies
Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and specifications
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Experience using business and quality management systems
Desirable Experience
- Previous leadership role in operations, quality, or inspection teams
Experience implementing daily management systems in manufacturing environments
Strong customer focus with understanding of operational quality expectations
Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and resolve complex quality issues
Experience in aerospace or high-integrity regulated industries
