About the Role
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology. This role includes an honorary consultant contract with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and is ideal for candidates with a strong track record in clinical trials, oncology research, and academic leadership.
The successful candidate will:
- Provide clinical leadership as Clinical Director of the Brighton & Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU)
- Partner with the Sussex Cancer Centre and the Health and Care Research Partnership
- Develop and lead research programmes across oncology, including translational and clinical trials
- Mentor academic and NHS colleagues, supporting career development and research capacity
- Drive growth of the cancer-focused trial portfolio, including both solid and haematological malignancies
- Engage in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, contributing to BMBS courses, student research projects, and clinical placements
 Research and Academic Leadership
- Lead an independent programme of oncology research, leveraging BSMS facilities for laboratory and health outcomes research
- Contribute to BSMS’s cross-cutting research themes: health inequalities, population health/prevention, and coastal community health
- Support grant applications and funding acquisition to strengthen oncology research in Sussex
- Promote interdisciplinary collaboration via the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC), connecting BSMS, University of Sussex, University of Brighton, and NHS Trusts across Sussex
 Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide honorary consultant clinical duties at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (0.5 FTE)
- Deliver clinical expertise in Medical or Clinical Oncology (CCT required)
- Participate in clinical trials leadership, mentorship, and patient care initiatives
- Help expand post-licensing and optimization trial opportunities across multiple tumour types
 Teaching and Mentorship
- Support student-led oncology activities and career development
- Facilitate Student Selected Components (SSCs), clinical placements, and individual research projects
- Contribute to teaching across medicine and surgery curricula
- Collaborate with external organizations to strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate training
 Candidate Profile
- Senior academic with sustained national or international impact in research, education, and leadership (for Professor level)
- Strong clinical track record in oncology, including trial management and mentorship
- Ability to build partnerships and strategic initiatives within academic and clinical networks
