Role Overview
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for a senior academic appointment at either Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology level. This post incorporates an honorary consultant position within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT) and provides the opportunity to lead oncology research and clinical trials across Sussex.
A central element of the role is to act as Clinical Director for the Brighton & Sussex Clinical Trials Unit, guiding its strategic expansion and strengthening its partnership with the Sussex Cancer Centre and regional Health and Care Research Partnership.
This position is suited to experienced clinical academics with a proven record in clinical trials, research leadership, and academic development. The postholder will play a major role in expanding cancer research capacity within Sussex, helping to build a developing oncology academic group at BSMS and UHSFT.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Academic Leadership
- Lead an independent, high-quality oncology research programme, with strong emphasis on clinical trials.
- Drive development of new oncology research areas, complementing BSMS strengths in global health, infection, mental health, and haemato-oncology.
- Make a significant contribution to major grant applications, research income generation, and trial portfolio expansion.
- Support laboratory-based, translational, clinical and health-outcomes research initiatives.
- Provide mentorship and research leadership across BSMS and the NHS Trust.
Clinical Trials Oversight
- Provide clinical leadership within the Clinical Trials Unit, with dedicated PAs allocated to this function.
- Enhance the cancer trials portfolio across solid tumours and haematological malignancies, including optimisation and post-licensing studies.
- Collaborate closely with academic and NHS partners to strengthen recruitment and trial delivery.
Teaching & Education
- Contribute to undergraduate (BMBS) and postgraduate teaching and supervision.
- Support student involvement in oncology-focused academic activities and guide career development.
- Engage clinical colleagues in delivering high-quality placements, SSCs and student research opportunities.
Clinical Duties
- Hold a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant role in the Oncology Department within UHSFT.
- Open to clinicians with CCT in Clinical Oncology or Medical Oncology.
Professorial Expectation (if applicable)
- Demonstrate sustained national and international impact in research, education, and leadership.
- Undertake broader School-level leadership responsibilities.
