About the Role

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking an outstanding clinical academic to join as either Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, depending on experience and career stage.

This is a senior leadership role combining academic excellence with clinical impact. You will take on a pivotal position as Clinical Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), shaping and expanding the region’s oncology trials portfolio.

Working across BSMS and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a central role in strengthening partnerships across research, clinical services, and regional health networks. The role also offers the opportunity to influence the future direction of cancer research and clinical trials across Sussex.

What You’ll Be Leading

Strategic development of oncology clinical trials across Sussex
Clinical leadership of the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU)
Expansion of academic-led cancer research programmes
Growth of research income through major grant applications
Development of interdisciplinary collaborations across institutions
Mentorship of clinical academics and research-active colleagues
Strengthening links between translational research and patient care

You will also contribute to building a sustainable and high-impact clinical academic oncology group within BSMS and the NHS Trust.

Research & Academic Contribution

You will lead your own research programme, supported by strong infrastructure and collaborative networks. Opportunities span:

The Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC) provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment, bringing together expertise from multiple universities and NHS partners to advance cancer treatment and outcomes.

Teaching & Academic Leadership

As a senior academic, you will play an influential role in education across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Your contribution will include:

Delivering and shaping teaching in oncology-related areas
Supporting curriculum development across medicine and surgery
Enhancing student experience through innovative teaching approaches
Mentoring students and supporting career development in oncology
Encouraging clinical engagement in teaching, including placements and research projects

At Professorial level, you will also take on broader leadership responsibilities, contributing to institutional strategy and academic direction.

Clinical Responsibilities

You will hold an honorary consultant position (0.5 FTE) within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, contributing to clinical oncology services.

The role is open to both Medical and Clinical Oncologists who:

Have completed specialist training
Hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in their specialty

You will support the continued expansion of clinical trials across tumour types, including solid and haematological malignancies.
