Job Description

About Us

The Research Department of Epilepsy (DoE) at UCL is dedicated to transforming the lives of people living with epilepsy. Our mission is to identify, understand, and address the underlying mechanisms of epilepsy and its associated comorbidities, integrating basic and clinical science to achieve tangible patient impact.

The Sisodiya research group focuses on complex epilepsies through a multimodal approach—combining clinical phenotyping, genomics, imaging, and other innovative methods. The group also explores the effects of climate change on neurological disorders, with the aim of translating research findings into clinical practice.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Principal Research Fellow to lead cutting-edge research on the genomics of epilepsy, embedded within a wider translational research programme that includes climate change and neurological outcomes. You will work under the supervision of Professor Sanjay Sisodiya and collaborate with national and international partners, including Genomics England, UK Biobank, Epi25, and ENIGMA-Epilepsy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of analysts, providing strategic bioinformatics support
  • Analyze clinical and genomic data from well-characterized epilepsy cohorts, ensuring clinical applicability
  • Develop and optimize genomic analysis pipelines and computational workflows
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate clinical and genomic datasets
  • Contribute to publications, grant applications, and dissemination of research findings
  • This role is funded by Epilepsy Society until 31 May 2028, with potential for extension.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for candidates who possess:

  • A PhD in Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience in computational genomics, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics research
  • Proven leadership of junior analysts or computational teams
  • Expertise in Linux environments, scripting/programming (Bash, Python, R), and genomic pipelines
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale datasets and public repositories (e.g., Genomics England, UK Biobank, gnomAD)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, collaboration capabilities, and problem-solving mindset
  • Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to high-quality research standards
  • This role is suitable for international applicants and meets the eligibility requirements for Skilled Worker or Global Talent visas.

Benefits

UCL provides a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • 41 days annual leave (27 days + 8 bank holidays + 6 closure days)
  • Option to purchase up to 5 additional leave days
  • CARE pension scheme
  • Cycle-to-work and season ticket loans
  • Immigration support and relocation assistance
  • On-site nursery and gym facilities
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
  • Employee Assistance Programme and discounted medical insurance
  • Flexible, part-time, and job-share arrangements will be considered wherever feasible.
