About the Opportunity

The Department of Economics within the School of Philosophy, Politics and Economics (SPPE) at the University of Reading is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate. This full-time post is part of a funded research project titled “The effects of permanent school closures on pupils’ outcomes”, supported by the Nuffield Foundation.

You will play a key role in shaping the project’s quantitative research agenda, conducting causal analyses, producing research outputs for both academic and policy audiences, and supporting dissemination activities. The position is offered on an 18-month fixed-term basis, with an expected start date of 1 May 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter). Hybrid and remote working arrangements can be accommodated, provided you are based in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Lead and contribute to the design and implementation of quantitative research.
  • Analyse large administrative datasets to identify causal effects.
  • Prepare drafts of research papers aimed at academic journals and policymakers.
  • Participate in project meetings and events.
  • Contribute to the timely delivery and communication of project findings.

Person Specification

You should have:

  • A completed PhD in Economics or a closely related discipline (or be close to completion).
  • Exceptional quantitative and econometric expertise.
  • Experience handling and analysing large-scale datasets.
  • Advanced skills in statistical programming (e.g., Stata, R, or Python).
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare polished outputs for diverse audiences.
