Job Description

About the Role

University of Reading is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to contribute to advanced wildfire modelling research within the internationally collaborative LEMONTREE project.

LEMONTREE Project brings together scientists working to develop new theoretical foundations for understanding land ecosystem dynamics. This role focuses on applying eco-evolutionary optimality principles to model wildfire–vegetation interactions, helping improve how fire behaviour is represented in environmental systems modelling.

You will work within a multidisciplinary research team to expand an emerging modelling framework capable of simulating wildfire occurrence at fine temporal scales, linking vegetation dynamics, fuel characteristics, and burn probability. The work includes model optimisation, testing, and validation using experimental and field data.

What You’ll Do

In this research-focused role, you will:

  • Extend wildfire modelling frameworks using eco-evolutionary optimality theory
  • Develop modules representing vegetation cover, fuel load, and drying processes
  • Simulate wildfire occurrence on a weekly timestep
  • Evaluate model performance using statistical techniques and empirical datasets
  • Collaborate with project scientists to refine theoretical and applied modelling approaches
  • Manage research timelines and deliverables within a structured project environment

Candidate Profile

We welcome candidates who demonstrate:

  • A PhD in environmental science or a closely related discipline (by start date)
  • Understanding of environmental drivers influencing wildfire dynamics
  • Knowledge of statistical and process-based wildfire modelling
  • Familiarity with eco-evolutionary modelling concepts
  • Strong programming ability in R and Python
  • Experience applying statistical model evaluation techniques
  • Evidence of research productivity appropriate to career stage
  • Independent working skills with effective workload planning
