Role Overview

Are you a qualified or newly qualified nurse eager to develop your skills in a dynamic surgical environment? Montacute Ward (North) is a 22-bedded specialist unit providing care for patients with complex vascular needs. As part of the regional vascular network, we manage planned and emergency patients, deliver advanced wound care, address vascular pain, and coordinate multifactorial discharges.

This position offers hands-on experience with challenging clinical cases, combined with a supportive environment focused on staff development and training. Full-time and part-time hours are available, with flexible working on a rota basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver evidence-based, patient-centred care, reflecting the philosophy and standards of the Trust
  • Use multidisciplinary approaches to care, involving patients and their relatives in line with the Patient and Public Involvement Strategy
  • Support daily patient care and maintain high standards of clinical practice
  • For experienced Band 5 nurses, provide clinical and managerial leadership in the absence of senior staff
  • Mentor junior staff and support the ongoing professional development of colleagues
  • Maintain accurate documentation and patient records, both electronic and paper-based, in line with Trust and NHS Data Protection Regulations
  • Perform higher-level clinical skills required for vascular and surgical care

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration:

  • Evidence of NMC registration (NMC Registration – GOV.UK)
  • Completion of relevant qualifications and practice assessor training
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal

Knowledge:

  • Awareness of current NHS policies and legislation (NHS Legislation Guidance)
  • Understanding of clinical governance, audits, and research
  • Familiarity with patient safety and quality improvement standards (NHS Patient Safety)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical skills for complex clinical situations
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with patients, carers, and colleagues
  • Professional and patient-focused approach
  • Ability to manage own time and support team workload
  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of patients
  • Basic IT literacy, including word processing and email
  • Physically capable of performing duties including walking, bending, and assisting patients

Desirable:

  • Proven experience in clinical leadership
  • Experience in vascular nursing
  • Ability to work independently while following agreed policies and procedures

Experience Required

  • Essential: At least 3 years of surgical experience and experience in mentoring colleagues
  • Desirable: Experience of clinical leadership within a vascular or surgical setting
