The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced and inspiring nursing leader to join our operating department as Matron (Theatre). This is a high-visibility leadership role where your presence, judgement, and compassion will directly influence patient safety, staff confidence, and the quality of theatre services.

You will act as a senior clinical leader — supporting teams, shaping standards, and ensuring that care delivery is safe, efficient, and person-centred. This role combines operational leadership with professional influence, allowing you to guide service improvement while remaining closely connected to frontline care.

What the Role Involves

As Theatre Matron, you will:

  • Provide visible clinical leadership across theatre environments
  • Support and develop nursing and perioperative staff
  • Lead governance, safety, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Manage staffing, resources, and service priorities
  • Collaborate with clinicians and senior leaders to shape service delivery
  • Promote a culture of wellbeing, accountability, and continuous learning
  • Lead change projects that improve patient outcomes
  • You will work in a fast-paced setting that requires resilience, clear communication, and confident decision-making.

Working Environment

The Trust serves communities across Mansfield, Ashfield, Newark, Sherwood, and neighbouring counties. Care is delivered through a clinically led, collaborative culture where teamwork, respect, and compassion are core expectations.

Colleagues are supported through strong wellbeing initiatives, development pathways, and inclusive leadership. The organisation actively encourages applications from under-represented groups to ensure the workforce reflects the communities served.

Professional Requirements

You must have:

  • Current RN/RM registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Teaching/assessing qualification (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Significant senior nursing leadership experience in complex acute settings
  • Desirable: postgraduate or management qualifications and experience leading patient safety or service improvement programmes.

Knowledge & Leadership Profile

You will demonstrate:

  • Strong understanding of contemporary healthcare and professional standards
  • Leadership within multidisciplinary clinical environments
  • Excellent communication, reporting, and teaching skills
  • Ability to manage pressure and competing priorities
  • Experience influencing organisational change
  • Commitment to patient safety and workforce development
  • Experience working with regulatory standards and quality frameworks is advantageous.

  • Staff wellbeing is actively prioritised
  • Development and progression opportunities are encouraged
  • Innovation and improvement are embedded in daily work
  • This role offers the chance to shape theatre services while mentoring future leaders and strengthening patient care standards.
