About the Role
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Locum Consultant Geriatrician to provide maternity leave cover within the Care of Older People team at Musgrove Park Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates approaching CCT or established consultants to join a highly supportive, multidisciplinary environment alongside 17 consultant colleagues.
The post includes specialist inpatient and outpatient care across geriatric medicine, frailty services, ortho geriatrics, dementia and delirium care, movement disorders, and liaison with surgical, oncology, and cardiology teams.
This role encourages subspecialty development in areas such as frailty, dementia, heart failure, movement disorders, and surgical liaison. Teaching, supervision, and quality improvement are integral components of the post, with additional SPA time available for education and research.
Key Responsibilities
Provide expert geriatric care for complex older patients across inpatient wards and outpatient clinics.
Lead and contribute to specialist services including:
- Front door frailty assessment (Emergency Department and Acute Frailty Unit)
- Ortho geriatrics and osteoporosis management
- Dementia and delirium clinics
- Parkinson’s and movement disorder clinics
- Surgical, oncology, and cardiology liaison
- Development of subspecialty outpatient services
- Clinical supervision and mentorship of junior doctors, medical students, and trainees.
- Participate in audit, quality improvement, service development, and clinical governance.
- Engage in teaching, appraisal, and training activities, including simulation-based teaching and undergraduate education.
- Optional participation in General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota, according to experience and preference.
- Contribute to the development of the Trust’s 7-day frailty service, including innovation in models of care.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Registration:
- Full GMC registration
- with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT).
- Broad experience managing complex older adults across acute and community settings.
- Strong commitment to multidisciplinary team working.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
- Experience in teaching and supervising junior doctors or trainees.
Desirable Experience:
- Special interest in frailty, dementia, falls, osteoporosis, or community geriatrics.
- Experience with acutely frail older patients.
- Engagement in service development, quality improvement, or clinical research.
- Educational interests, including simulation-based or undergraduate teaching.
