About the Opportunity

The University of Reading’s School of Law is expanding its criminology provision and is seeking to appoint an outstanding Lecturer in Criminology to join a growing and ambitious academic team.

This appointment offers the opportunity to shape the next generation of criminologists through innovative teaching, while also contributing to the continued growth of the School’s research profile. You will play a central role in the delivery of newly developed undergraduate criminology programmes and in strengthening criminological research at Reading.

We are looking for candidates with strong scholarly ambition, a commitment to inclusive education, and a clear vision for impactful research.

Teaching & Academic Contribution

As a Lecturer in Criminology, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate criminology programmes
  • Lead and contribute to core modules, including:
  • Introduction to Criminology
  • Introduction to Criminal Justice
  • Advanced Criminological Theory

Research Methods

  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects
  • Contribute to curriculum development and programme design
  • Engage in academic citizenship within the School and wider University
  • Expertise in quantitative research methods is particularly welcomed.

Research Profile

You will bring an established or developing record of high-quality criminological research, with outputs appropriate to your career stage and clear plans for future development.

While applications are welcomed from across the criminology discipline, the School is especially keen to hear from candidates with research expertise in:

  • Race and racism
  • Organised crime
  • Green criminology

The School already has strong research coverage in gender and youth crime, offering opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary work.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • A PhD (completed or near completion) in Criminology or a closely related discipline
  • Evidence of excellent teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • A strong or emerging publication record in criminology
  • Ambitious and credible research plans
  • The ability to contribute positively to a collegial, inclusive academic environment
