Overview
Medivet is looking for an experienced Lead Veterinary Surgeon to join and lead the team at its Calne practice. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident veterinary professional who enjoys combining clinical work with leadership responsibilities.
As Lead Vet, you will play an important role in shaping clinical standards, mentoring colleagues, and maintaining the high level of care the practice is known for within the local community. This position is ideal for someone who wants to influence practice development while continuing hands-on clinical work.
The practice is located in Calne, offering easy access to countryside landscapes and nearby cities such as Bath and Bristol.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Provide leadership in maintaining high medical and surgical standards
- Oversee daily clinical operations within the practice
- Promote evidence-based veterinary medicine and patient care
Team Development
- Mentor and support veterinary nurses and junior colleagues
- Assist with the training and development of student veterinary professionals
- Encourage a collaborative and positive team culture
Client Care
- Build strong relationships with pet owners and maintain clear communication regarding treatment options
- Deliver compassionate and professional veterinary services
Practice Management Support
- Work alongside the Head Nurse to manage rotas, workflow, and case continuity
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives
- Help develop practice protocols and contribute to regional clinical standards
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical experience alongside leadership potential.
Applicants should have:
- Registration as a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS)
- Solid experience in small animal veterinary practice
- Confidence in routine surgery and medical cases
- The ability to manage more complex cases with referral support when needed
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Holding or currently pursuing a veterinary certificate qualification would be advantageous but is not essential.
Working Pattern
The role offers flexibility and work-life balance.
Typical working arrangements include:
- 3–4 working days per week
- One Saturday morning in three
- No bank holiday shifts
- No on-call responsibilities
