We have some of the best university facilities in the UK, achieve outstanding results in teaching and research, and have been awarded Gold in the prestigious Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023, placing us among the top universities in the country for outstanding student experience and outcomes.

We are financially solid and really ambitious, and we provide our employees with an inclusive culture that focusses on staff wellbeing. You can be confident that you will receive all of the aid and encouragement you need to establish a satisfying career with numerous opportunities to advance your abilities.

About the college/department.

Building on their recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) success, the University of Derby and the School of Computing are investing in and expanding a number of major research areas. This involves establishing the £13 million Institute of Technology in 2023, developing our Data Sciences Research Centre, and strengthening our competence in Data Sciences, Cyber Security & Information Security, Software Engineering, Internet of Things, Computer Games, and Immersive Technologies. At the School of Computing, we are at the vanguard of innovation, using data science to address some of our field’s most critical concerns. Our dynamic team of researchers and academics is committed to furthering knowledge and creating cutting-edge solutions that have a real-world impact. Our first priority is to work with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as public and private sector partners.

About the Role

Are you passionate about data science and keen to contribute to groundbreaking research? Do you have a smart analytical mind and a desire to solve complicated challenges using data-driven approaches? If so, we’ve got an exciting opportunity for you!

Data Science is one of six academic subjects in which the University is investing, and it is supported by the Data Science research centre.

The Data Science topic has identified three groupings that better reflect our partners’ current research focus. These are: Digital Society; Collaborative and Data-Driven Engineering; and Digital Health and Well-Being. There are now numerous projects underway with our local partners, the majority of which take the form of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. We plan to strengthen the three clusters by recruiting a researcher. This is a three-year full-time post based at our Markeaton Street campus.

About You

We are searching for an experienced Researcher with a track record of providing high-quality results, expertise authoring research proposals, and managing the design, implementation, and analysis of data-driven and AI research initiatives.

The selected candidate will have a PhD in data science, artificial intelligence, or a related field and be able to establish their research agenda in a way that complements and enhances the current research clusters. You will have knowledge in AI fields such as machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, and explainable AI.

You are required to have strong communication skills and the ability to distribute research findings to a larger audience.

Benefits

A generous yearly leave entitlement of 47 days, including bank holidays and concessionary days (pro rata).
Teachers’ Pension Scheme
A suite of holistic wellbeing benefits and support, including family-friendly policies, significant sick pay provision, and comprehensive Employee Assistance Program.
Access to a variety of employee discounts at high street retailers
Discounted on-site gym
Discounted entry to Devonshire Spa and Cycle to Work scheme.
A flexible work environment.
A dedication to personal and professional improvement.
