About the Role
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking compassionate and skilled Band 6 Integrated Community Midwives to join its progressive and supportive maternity service.
In this role, you will provide individualised, high-quality maternity care across community settings and within the Trust’s midwife-led Birth Centre. You will work both independently and alongside multidisciplinary colleagues to support women and birthing people through every stage of pregnancy, labour and the postnatal journey.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Midwifery Care
- Deliver comprehensive care throughout antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods.
- Develop personalised care plans that support informed choices and patient preferences.
- Promote safe and evidence-based practice across maternity services.
- Provide care for both low-risk pregnancies and complex clinical situations.
Community & Birth Centre Practice
- Work flexibly across community teams and midwifery-led birth centres.
- Support home births and water births in line with Trust guidelines.
- Maintain continuity of care for families throughout their maternity journey.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Build effective partnerships with:
- Midwives and maternity support workers
- Neonatal teams and obstetricians
- GPs and health visitors
- Safeguarding and social care teams
Safety and Risk Management
- Monitor the progress of pregnancy and labour, identifying early signs of complications.
- Perform risk assessments and escalate concerns promptly.
- Support emergency responses and obstetric emergency management.
Leadership and Mentorship
- Support newly qualified midwives, students and junior staff.
- Participate in mentoring, supervision and clinical teaching.
- Contribute to a positive and learning-focused working environment.
Documentation and Service Improvement
- Maintain clear and accurate clinical records in maternity IT systems.
- Participate in audits, governance activities and quality improvement programmes.
- Contribute to safe and effective maternity service delivery.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Degree or diploma in Midwifery
- Completion of a preceptorship programme with post-qualification experience
- Mentor or assessor training
- Safeguarding training (Level 3 for adults and children)
Desirable Qualifications
- Neonatal and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) qualification or working towards it
- Neonatal Life Support certification
Essential Experience
- Demonstrated experience as a clinical midwife
- Ongoing professional development including obstetric emergency management
- Experience supporting instrumental births
Additional Requirements
- Full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle
- Clinical competencies including venepuncture, cannulation and perineal suturing
- Ability to practise autonomously in both community and acute care settings
