Job Description

Role Overview

This position offers the chance to work at the forefront of paediatric genomics within a nationally recognised rare disease laboratory. As a Genetic Technologist, you will support high-precision diagnostic testing that informs life-changing clinical decisions for children and families.

You will join a technique-focused laboratory team where attention to detail, scientific curiosity, and collaboration are essential. The environment is dynamic, quality-driven, and built around continuous improvement in genomic diagnostics.

What You’ll Do

Your daily work will centre on delivering safe, accurate laboratory testing. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing cytogenetic and molecular genetic laboratory techniques
  • Preparing and processing biological samples for diagnostic workflows
  • Operating specialist equipment for sequencing, microarray and fragment analysis
  • Recording laboratory data in line with accreditation standards
  • Supporting quality assurance and compliance processes
  • Working collaboratively with scientists, technologists and clinical teams
  • Adapting to evolving genomic technologies and methodologies

Techniques may include cell culture, fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH), chromosomal microarray, next generation sequencing, Sanger sequencing and related molecular workflows.

Laboratory Environment

You will work within a large rare disease genomics hub serving a regional population of around ten million people. The laboratory contributes to national genomic programmes and collaborates with academic partners including the UCL Institute of Child Health, supporting innovation in paediatric genetics.

Diagnostic services align with national genomic standards overseen by NHS England, ensuring that testing is clinically robust, ethical, and patient-focused.

Who This Role Suits

This opportunity is ideal for someone who:

  • Enjoys structured laboratory work requiring precision
  • Has a strong interest in genomics and rare disease diagnostics
  • Can follow technical procedures carefully and consistently
  • Works effectively under supervision and within multidisciplinary teams
  • Is adaptable as technologies and workflows evolve

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • HNC/HND, diploma in science, or equivalent qualification
  • Practical genetics laboratory experience
  • Foundational understanding of cytogenetic and molecular techniques
  • Ability to work safely and accurately in a regulated laboratory
  • Desirable: a biological science or genetics degree and experience training colleagues.

Core Skills

You will bring:

  • Evidence of laboratory molecular/cytogenetic technique competence
  • Strong organisational and documentation accuracy
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with laboratory information systems
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new methodologies

Workplace Culture
