The Role: Fraud Officer

As a Fraud Officer, you will investigate potential fraud within the benefits system. Your work ensures that financial support reaches those who genuinely need it while safeguarding taxpayer money.

This is a frontline operational role combining investigation, evidence review, decision-making and professional communication.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Conducting structured interviews (telephone and face-to-face)
  • Reviewing financial and documentary evidence with attention to detail
  • Identifying inconsistencies and potential irregularities
  • Calculating and correcting benefit awards and overpayments
  • Maintaining accurate case records and handling sensitive information securely
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners
  • Managing a varied and sometimes complex caseload
  • Promoting fraud awareness across business areas
  • You’ll be expected to follow DWP policy and maintain high professional standards throughout.

Professional Standards & Accreditation

All successful candidates must achieve and maintain Practitioner-level membership of the Government Counter Fraud Profession (GCFP).

This includes:

  • Completing annual self-assessment
  • Following a structured learning pathway
  • Maintaining professional standards in counter-fraud practice
  • Failure to maintain required membership may result in redeployment.

Working Hours

  • Full-time: 37 hours per week

Operational hours:

  • Monday–Friday: 07:45 – 20:00
  • Saturday: 08:45 – 17:00
