Role Overview

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a highly skilled Estates Officer (Mechanical) to join our Estates & Facilities team. This pivotal role ensures that mechanical systems across our hospital estate – including HVAC, steam boilers, water treatment, and other critical plant – are safe, compliant, and maintained to the highest standards.

You will act as an Authorised Person, providing technical leadership, statutory compliance oversight, and support for key capital and maintenance projects. Your expertise will directly impact patient safety, staff wellbeing, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee maintenance, installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Act as the responsible person for service-critical systems such as steam boilers and HVAC.
  • Ensure full compliance with NHS Technical Memoranda (HTMs), health & safety regulations, and legislative standards
  • Lead and support capital projects related to mechanical infrastructure.
  • Provide technical expertise and assurance in design and project meetings.
  • Conduct risk assessments, safety audits, and governance reviews for mechanical systems.
  • Contribute to forward planning, budgeting, and sustainability initiatives, helping the Trust meet environmental and operational targets.
  • Supervise and mentor junior team members, promoting a culture of excellence and accountability.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: ONC/HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, with evidence of ongoing CPD.
  • Desirable: HND/Degree, PRINCE2 or equivalent Project Management Qualification, Membership of a relevant professional body.

Experience & Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of CAFM systems and BMS (Building Management Systems).
  • Experience managing mechanical system maintenance and leading teams.
  • Proven supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Desirable: Report writing, business case preparation, budgeting, and working with senior/executive management.
