ResearchPlus is a newly established partnership bringing together a group of respected research-intensive universities across the UK. These institutions play a vital role in strengthening the nation’s research landscape and supporting innovation that benefits society, industry, and government.
The collaborative aims to champion the impact of research-focused universities and contribute actively to national conversations about higher education, science policy, and innovation. By sharing knowledge, policy insights, and collective expertise, ResearchPlus seeks to reinforce the UK’s research ecosystem and promote collaboration between universities, government departments, businesses, and communities.
The partnership currently includes ten universities and is expected to grow over time as other institutions with similar research missions join the network.

Role Overview
ResearchPlus is recruiting its first Director, a senior leadership role responsible for establishing and guiding the organisation during its early development. The successful candidate will lead both the strategic direction and daily operations of the partnership.
Working closely with the ResearchPlus co-chairs—currently the Vice-Chancellors of Brunel University London and the University of Sussex—the Director will ensure that the organisation becomes a respected voice in higher education and research policy discussions across the UK.
The role will involve engagement with government departments, policymakers, regulatory bodies, and research organisations. The Director will also oversee advocacy initiatives, policy analysis, and partnerships that strengthen the influence and visibility of ResearchPlus.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership for ResearchPlus and help shape its long-term mission.
- Represent the partnership in discussions with government, policymakers, research councils, and regulatory bodies.
- Develop policy insights and evidence-based analysis on higher education and research innovation.
- Coordinate collaboration among member universities and promote shared priorities.
- Establish effective organisational structures and manage the day-to-day operations of the partnership.
- Identify opportunities to expand the membership and impact of ResearchPlus.
- Communicate the value and contributions of research-focused universities to stakeholders and the wider public.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of the UK higher education and research environment along with the leadership skills needed to build a new organisation from the ground up.
Essential attributes include:
- Strong knowledge of UK higher education, research policy, or innovation systems.
- Strategic thinking and the ability to analyse evolving policy landscapes.
- Excellent communication and advocacy abilities.
- Experience working collaboratively across multiple organisations or institutions.
- Proven organisational and leadership capabilities.
- Ability to translate strategic ideas into practical initiatives and measurable outcomes.
The Director should also demonstrate a collaborative mindset, encouraging alignment and shared goals among partner universities with distinct identities and priorities.
Working Location
Although the University of Sussex will act as the employing institution, the role may be physically based either at the University of Sussex campus or at Brunel University London, depending on operational requirements and the successful candidate’s preference.
