About IDS

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a globally recognized center for research, learning, and teaching on international development. For nearly 60 years, IDS has challenged orthodox thinking, shaped policy and practice, and advanced ideas that contribute to more equitable and sustainable societies.

Working closely with governments, foundations, NGOs, multilateral organizations, civil society, and academics, IDS addresses urgent challenges such as climate justice, global health, inequality, governance, and the impact of emerging technologies.

Together with the University of Sussex, IDS has been ranked first in the world for Development Studies for nine consecutive years (QS World University Rankings).

About the Role

The Board of Trustees is seeking a new Director to lead IDS into its next strategic phase. Reporting to the Board, the Director will:

Provide visionary leadership and intellectual inspiration across the Institute.

Strengthen IDS’s role as a respected and independent space for development thinking.

Enhance IDS’s profile and influence globally.

Shape and deliver strategy while diversifying and growing funding sources.

Build and maintain equitable, global partnerships.

Foster an inclusive culture where staff and students thrive.

Candidate Profile

IDS is seeking a leader who aligns strongly with its mission and values, with the following qualities:

Intellectual and academic standing to inspire across disciplines and geographies.

Proven leadership experience in complex, multidimensional organizations.

Direct experience of working in the global South.

A strong record of building equitable international partnerships.

Financial and operational acumen.

Excellent people leadership and communication skills.

The ability to navigate shifting UK and global policy contexts.

Understanding of teaching and pedagogy.

Insight into the role of emerging technologies in shaping development.
