Exciting Opportunity for a Band 6 Nurse

We’re on the lookout for a seasoned intensive care nurse holding a recognized critical care qualification to step into a leadership position in our welcoming team. As a bustling trauma center and the main referral hub for the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex region, we collaborate closely with our partner unit at Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. This means you’ll occasionally work across sites to ensure seamless care.

This position qualifies for visa sponsorship through the UK’s Skilled Worker route via UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI). We’ll support eligible candidates who satisfy UKVI’s criteria, such as meeting the skill level, a minimum salary of £25,000, and any job-specific requirements.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

• Deliver and assess high-quality, evidence-based nursing for level 2 and 3 critically ill patients, tailoring plans to their unique needs.
• Guide and nurture your colleagues through mentoring, skill evaluations, and ongoing development.
• Drive improvements in critical care practices to keep our standards cutting-edge.
• Take charge during shifts, providing guidance and support to the team.
• Contribute to audits, projects, and initiatives that align with local and trust-wide goals.
• Under the supervision of a team leader, handle staff performance reviews and coordinate shifts, stepping up when a Band 7 nurse is unavailable.

Communication and Family Support

Effective teamwork is at the core of what we do. You’ll help foster strong connections across the multidisciplinary team, both within our ICU/HDU and throughout the trust, including with patients and their loved ones.

• Join team retreats and unit gatherings to share ideas and address concerns with leadership.
• Follow NMC standards for precise, professional documentation, whether on paper or digitally.
• Master essential tools like trust email, messaging systems, intercoms, and phones for smooth operations.
• Lead thorough shift handovers, ensuring key details are shared while addressing any inappropriate remarks about patients.
• Engage in detailed case discussions for complex patients, including tough topics like treatment withdrawal in cases with limited recovery prospects.
• Offer one-on-one emotional support to families, breaking down intricate medical details in an understandable, compassionate way.
• Handle sensitive conversations about serious updates, such as worsening conditions, sudden losses, or end-of-life decisions, always with empathy and tact to navigate potential disagreements.
• Assist relatives during challenging processes like treatment withdrawal or organ donation, working alongside specialists like donation nurses and transplant coordinators.
• Spot and report any dips in care quality within the team, choosing the right moment and approach to raise concerns.
• Adapt communication for patients with cognitive challenges due to their illness, using clear, sensitive methods to ensure they’re informed and understood.
• Participate in mortality reviews and discussions to learn and improve as a unit.
• Maintain clear, timely communication within your shift team, collaborating closely with the team leader.
