Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant Stroke Physician to join our high-performing stroke team during a time of exciting service transformation.

In April 2026, we will open a brand-new 12-bed Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Musgrove Park Hospital. This role offers a unique opportunity to help shape stroke services across Somerset, working in a supportive, multidisciplinary, and research-active environment.

You will join a team of 8 consultant stroke physicians and 4 specialist doctors, delivering high-quality, patient-centered stroke care across hyperacute, acute, and rehabilitation pathways.

Key Responsibilities

As a Consultant Stroke Physician, your core duties will include:

Clinical Care

  • Lead daily ward rounds on the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU).
  • Support 24/7 thrombolysis services and work with the AGWS telemedicine network.
  • Run rapid-access TIA clinics, available 7 days per week at Musgrove Park.
  • Provide care on acute stroke units at Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospitals.
  • Oversee stroke rehabilitation and early supported discharge programmes.

Teaching & Supervision

  • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to junior doctors and medical students.
  • Participate in structured teaching programmes and professional development initiatives.

Research & Service Development

  • Lead and contribute to stroke research projects, supporting national and local studies.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and innovation within the stroke service.

On-Call Duties

  • Participate in a 1-in-8 weekend HASU on-call rota.
  • Primary base: Musgrove Park Hospital, with occasional cross-site responsibilities.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
  • Strong experience in acute stroke care, thrombolysis, TIA management, and stroke rehabilitation
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork skills

Desirable

  • Higher research degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
  • Evidence of teaching, audit, leadership, and management experience
  • Active involvement in stroke research or service improvement projects
