Job Description

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a committed and forward-thinking Consultant Stroke Physician to join its established and highly collaborative stroke service. This is a particularly exciting time to come on board, with the launch of a new 12-bed Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Musgrove Park Hospital planned for April 2026.

You’ll be part of a strong consultant body of 8 stroke physicians, supported by 4 specialist doctors, working together to deliver safe, responsive, and evidence-based stroke care across the county.

Your Role and Impact

As a Consultant Stroke Physician, you will contribute across the hyperacute, acute, and rehabilitation stroke pathway. Your responsibilities will include:

Clinical Leadership

  • Leading daily ward rounds on the Hyperacute Stroke Unit
  • Supporting 24/7 thrombolysis, working closely with the AGWS telemedicine network
  • Managing patients across acute stroke units at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital
  • Delivering high-quality stroke rehabilitation and supporting early supported discharge services

Specialist Clinics & On-Call

  • Running 7-day rapid access TIA clinics at Musgrove Park Hospital
  • Participating in the 1:8 weekend HASU on-call rota

Teaching, Research & Development

  • Supervising and teaching junior doctors and medical students
  • Actively contributing to a research-rich stroke portfolio, including national and multicentre trials
  • Supporting audit, service evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Your primary base will be Musgrove Park Hospital, with occasional cross-site working at Yeovil.

Job Planning & Professional Time

  • Total PAs: 10
  • 8.5 Direct Clinical Care
  • 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
  • Additional SPA time may be available for leadership, research, or service development
  • Final job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate
  • Informal visits are strongly encouraged
