Transform Rheumatology Services in Somerset

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications from experienced and enthusiastic Consultant Rheumatologists to join our innovative and supportive team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead, develop, and shape the county’s rheumatology services while collaborating with a growing multidisciplinary team.
This is a full-time position (10 PAs) with flexible arrangements considered to support both your professional ambitions and personal wellbeing. You may be based at either Yeovil District Hospital or Musgrove Park Hospital, with opportunities to work across the county.
Key Responsibilities
As a Consultant Rheumatologist, you will:
- Deliver expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with complex rheumatological conditions.
- Lead and run outpatient clinics, supporting specialist nursing staff.
- Provide inpatient care and manage ward referrals in collaboration with fellow consultants.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to expand and improve both local and countywide rheumatology services.
- Contribute to service development, clinical governance, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide cover for colleagues as needed and manage urgent rheumatology cases.
You will also have the opportunity to:
- Supervise and teach junior doctors and medical students.
- Participate in audits, research projects, and service evaluation to drive continuous improvement.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications:
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice (Check GMC registration)
- CCST in Rheumatology (or within six months of award)
- MRCP qualification or equivalent
Desirable Qualifications:
- Higher research degree (MD, PhD)
- Experience in teaching, leadership, and audit projects
- Track record in service development or quality improvement
Experience and Skills:
- Proven experience in adult rheumatology, managing both outpatient and inpatient care
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and provide clinical leadership
- Strong communication, teaching, and mentoring skills
