Role Summary — Lead Specialist Care for High-Risk Adolescents

Are you a compassionate and experienced Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist ready to shape specialist secure care for young people? We are seeking a Consultant in CAMHS to join Austen House, a 7-bed specialist adolescent low secure service within Hampshire & Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

This role offers a unique chance to lead clinical practice in a newly configured secure unit, providing expert assessment, trauma-informed care and recovery-focused treatment for young people with complex and high-risk mental health needs.

What You’ll Do

As a Consultant in CAMHS at Austen House, your responsibilities will include:

Clinical Leadership

Lead detailed psychiatric assessment, formulation and personalised treatment planning for adolescents admitted to the secure unit.

Act as Responsible Clinician with accountability for clinical decision-making and Mental Health Act responsibilities (including treatment under the Mental Health Act 1983).

Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise, support and mentor a multidisciplinary clinical team, ensuring delivery of evidence-based, trauma-informed care.
  • Promote best clinical practice, shared decision-making and high standards of care.
  • Provide guidance on risk management and collaborative care planning.

Service Improvement & Governance

  • Lead and contribute to quality improvement activities, clinical governance projects and continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Help shape service development, patient pathways and workforce learning.
  • Participate in weekly academic teaching, peer support groups and structured professional activities.

Education, Training & Research

  • Support and supervise trainees where appropriate.
  • Engage with research, audit and service evaluation to enhance outcomes for young people.
  • Access opportunities through NHS Leadership & Development programmes, coaching and mentoring.

Person Specification & Essential Criteria

To be considered for this role you must have:

Clinical Qualification & Registration

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a licence to practise in the UK.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent psychiatric qualification.
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (or within six months of CCT at interview).
  • Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act (recognised ability to carry out MHA assessments).

Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in child and adolescent mental health with a strong focus on complex and high-risk presentations.
  • Confidence in trauma-informed practice, risk formulation and multidisciplinary leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead clinical governance and quality improvement.
