Lead Acute Care in a Forward-Thinking Integrated Trust

This is not simply a Consultant post in Acute Medicine — it is an opportunity to shape how urgent and emergency care is delivered within one of the most integrated NHS organisations in England.

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Consultant in Acute Medicine who is ready to lead clinically, contribute strategically, and maintain a healthy work–life balance through an innovative annualised job planning model.

Relocation support is available (subject to terms).

The Role

You will join a team of seven Acute Medicine Consultants supported by junior doctors, physician associates and a strong multidisciplinary workforce. Our co-located Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit ensures efficient management of ambulatory patients and supports timely admission avoidance.

Your Core Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

  • Deliver consultant-led care across AMU, SDEC and the Emergency Department.
  • Lead the medical take and conduct post-take ward rounds.
  • Oversee safe referrals, discharge planning and patient flow.

Service Development

  • Improve pathways across acute and community services.
  • Contribute to protocol development and clinical redesign.
  • Strengthen integration with frailty and community-based services.
  • On-Call Commitment
  • Participate in the GIM rota (currently 1 in 16 weekends annually).

Education & Supervision

  • Support postgraduate doctors, locally employed clinicians and medical students from the University of Bristol.
  • Contribute to mentoring and training programmes.

Specialist Development

2 Programmed Activities (PAs) allocated to a specialist interest such as:

  • Frailty
  • Perioperative medicine
  • Acute oncology
  • Palliative care
  • Medical education

Research & Governance

  • Participate in audit and quality improvement.
  • Maintain appraisal and revalidation standards.
  • Contribute to governance and multidisciplinary collaboration.

  • 1.5 PAs – Core Supporting Professional Activities
  • 0.5 PAs – Educational/Corporate

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • MBBS and MRCP (or equivalent).
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within six months of CCT).
  • Broad experience in General and Acute Medicine.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD).
  • Subspecialty interest that complements Acute Medicine.
  • Experience in service leadership, audit or research.
  • Understanding of NHS service transformation and governance.
