You will join a team of seven Acute Medicine Consultants supported by junior doctors, physician associates, and an experienced multidisciplinary workforce. Our co-located Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit enables rapid assessment and treatment of ambulatory patients.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Leadership

  • Deliver consultant-led care across AMU, SDEC, and ED
  • Lead the medical take and post-take ward rounds
  • Provide specialist advice for referrals
  • Promote timely discharge planning

Service Development

  • Contribute to pathway redesign and protocol development
  • Strengthen collaboration with community services
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives
  • On-Call Commitment
  • Participate in the GIM rota (currently 1 in 16 weekends annually)

Education & Mentorship

  • Supervise and support postgraduate trainees
  • Contribute to teaching programmes, including students from the University of Bristol

Specialist Interest
Two Programmed Activities are protected for a specialty interest aligned with service need. Examples include:

  • Frailty
  • Perioperative medicine
  • Acute oncology
  • Palliative care
  • Medical education

Governance & Quality

  • Participate in appraisal and revalidation
  • Engage in audit, research, and quality improvement
  • Maintain professional standards in line with the General Medical Council
  • Example Job Plan (11 PAs)
  • 6 PAs – Direct Clinical Care (Acute Medicine)
  • 2 PAs – Specialist Interest
  • 1.5 PAs – Supporting Professional Activities
  • 0.5 PA – Educational/Corporate
  • 1 PA – On-call (plus supplement)

What We’re Looking For

Essential Criteria

  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
  • Broad experience in General and Acute Medicine
  • Demonstrated ability to lead within multidisciplinary teams

Desirable Attributes

  • Additional qualifications (MD/PhD)
  • Recent audit or research involvement
  • Sub-specialty interest complementary to Acute Medicine
  • Understanding of NHS leadership and service development
