Join a Leading Hepatology & Gastroenterology Service in Cornwall
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Hepatologist to join a forward-thinking and well-established Gastroenterology & Hepatology department based in Truro, Cornwall.
Working within Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in the South West, you will contribute to a service recognised for innovation, high clinical standards and commitment to patient-centred care.
This role offers a balanced job plan incorporating clinical service, teaching, governance and the opportunity to develop subspecialty interests within hepatology.
The Role
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver consultant-level care for patients with complex hepatology and gastroenterology conditions.
- Maintain the highest standards of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
- Participate in the day-to-day leadership and service development of the department.
- Contribute to the on-call rota in line with departmental arrangements.
Endoscopy & Subspecialty Development
- Deliver therapeutic and diagnostic colonoscopy services.
- Develop specialist hepatology interests with departmental support.
- Contribute to service redesign and quality improvement initiatives.
Teaching & Academic Contribution
- Teach and supervise undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary team education.
- Engage with academic opportunities, including collaboration with University of Exeter Medical School.
- Participate in research, with allocated programmed activities (PAs) available.
Governance & Professional Development
- Actively engage in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
- Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and appraisal.
- Support revalidation processes in line with General Medical Council standards.
All practice must comply with relevant UK legislation and professional frameworks, including:
- General Medical Council registration & licensing
- NHS Consultant Contract guidance
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
- Skilled Worker Visa guidance (where applicable)
- Clinical governance and NHS standards
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology (or within six months of obtaining CCT or equivalent at interview).
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
Desirable
- Higher research degree (MD, PhD or equivalent).
- Completion of a recognised “Train the Trainers” course.
- Formal management or leadership training.
Experience & Skills
Clinical Experience
- Substantial experience in Gastroenterology and Hepatology practice.
- Competence in therapeutic and diagnostic colonoscopy.
- Experience in clinical audit and governance activities.
Teaching & Leadership
- Demonstrated experience teaching medical students and postgraduate trainees.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Personal Attributes
- Strong clinical credibility and professional integrity.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Analytical and decision-making capability in complex clinical scenarios.
- Competent IT skills for electronic patient records and reporting.
- Fluency in English (minimum IELTS 7.5 where applicable).
Additional Requirements
- Satisfactory DBS clearance.
- Occupational Health clearance.
- Three satisfactory references.
Valid right to work in the UK (visa sponsorship available if required).
Ability to travel within and beyond Cornwall; on-call category A rota requires residence within 30 minutes of the hospital.
