Overview
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a skilled and forward-thinking Consultant Cardiologist to join its growing, countywide cardiology service. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a highly integrated healthcare system that combines acute, community, mental health, and diagnostic services under one Trust.
You will become part of a well-established and supportive team of 17 consultant cardiologists, working alongside specialist nurses, cardiac physiologists, and a robust clinical and research support network.
Your primary base will be Yeovil District Hospital, which has recently undergone significant investment, including the launch of a modern Diagnostic Centre in early 2026. The role also involves collaboration across multiple sites within Somerset, contributing to the continuous improvement of cardiology services across the region.
Role Responsibilities
In this position, you will play an active role in delivering high-quality cardiology care. Your duties will include:
- Conducting ward rounds within the Acute Cardiac Care Unit (ACCU) and cardiology wards
Running approximately three outpatient clinics per week
Assessing and triaging patient referrals
Supporting the development of efficient inpatient pathways to improve patient flow and reduce hospital stays
Delivering subspecialty clinics based on your expertise and service needs
Participating in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
Engaging in clinical governance, audit, and research initiatives
While any cardiology subspecialty interest is welcome, experience in imaging would be advantageous but is not mandatory.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), or eligibility within six months of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification
Certification in Advanced Life Support (ALS)
Proven experience in general cardiology
Essential Experience & Skills
- Ability to independently diagnose and manage cardiology patients
Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
Experience mentoring junior staff
Evidence of participation in clinical audit and service development
Desirable
MD or PhD
Subspecialty interest in cardiac imaging
