Role Overview
An exciting opportunity has become available for a Clinical Nurse Specialist (Band 7) to join the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Crisis Team working across North Yorkshire and York.
This role is ideal for an experienced mental health nurse who is passionate about supporting children and young people experiencing mental health crises. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership, advanced assessment, and specialist intervention within a fast-paced crisis response service.
The CAMHS Crisis Team provides 24-hour support for young people under 18 and their families who require urgent mental health care. While the main base for this role is in York, the post holder will travel across the wider locality when required to provide leadership and support clinical demand.
Flexible working options, including condensed working hours mainly Monday to Friday with occasional weekend shifts, may be considered.
About the Service
The CAMHS Crisis Team provides rapid mental health assessments and crisis intervention to young people experiencing severe emotional distress or behavioural difficulties. The service works closely with local health services, schools, and safeguarding teams to ensure young people receive timely support.
Based at Foss Park Hospital, the service collaborates with multiple community and healthcare providers across the region. Staff frequently participate in multi-agency meetings and work alongside professionals from education, social services, and healthcare to provide coordinated support.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment and Crisis Intervention
The Clinical Nurse Specialist will deliver expert care to young people experiencing mental health crises by:
- Carrying out comprehensive psychosocial assessments and evaluating immediate risks.
- Developing individualised safety plans and crisis management strategies.
- Providing guidance to clinicians and partner organisations when managing high-risk cases.
- Making informed clinical decisions in complex and rapidly evolving situations.
Leadership and Service Coordination
The role involves providing clinical leadership during shifts by:
- Coordinating daily clinical activity within the crisis service.
- Supporting junior clinicians with case management and clinical decision-making.
- Maintaining clear oversight of patient safety and care delivery across the locality.
Service Improvement and Quality Assurance
The post holder will contribute to continuous service development by:
- Conducting clinical audits and reviewing care standards.
- Sharing learning outcomes with colleagues to improve practice and service quality.
- Participating in leadership meetings and service development initiatives.
Education and Supervision
The Clinical Nurse Specialist will support workforce development by:
- Providing clinical supervision and mentoring to staff members.
- Delivering training and professional guidance within the team.
- Supporting a culture of reflective learning and continuous improvement.

Essential Qualifications
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Current professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
(RMN, RNLD, RGN or RNSC – CAMHS roles) - Recognised Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor qualification (or currently working toward it)
- Training in clinical supervision or willingness to undertake this training
- Postgraduate diploma in a relevant mental health or clinical specialty, or willingness to complete within two years
- Commitment to obtaining a recognised qualification in a governed psychological therapy (e.g., CBT, DBT, or Systemic Family Therapy) within the first year of the role.
Experience and Professional Knowledge
Essential Experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Significant clinical experience working with young people experiencing complex mental health needs
- Experience managing patients who present significant risk behaviours
- Strong background in clinical risk assessment and safeguarding practice
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams
- Participation in quality improvement or clinical governance activities.
Knowledge and Skills
Applicants should also have knowledge of:
- Current mental health policies and services affecting children and young people
- Legal frameworks governing mental health care, including the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
- Clinical risk management and safeguarding procedures
- Psychological approaches used in mental health treatment.
Additional Role Requirements
The role requires travel across the service area. Candidates must therefore:
- Be able to travel independently across the locality
- Have access to a suitable vehicle for work purposes
