About the Department

The Department of Neuromuscular Diseases at UCL is a centre of clinical and research excellence. Our interdisciplinary team of clinicians, geneticists, and basic scientists investigates the causes and mechanisms of neuromuscular and neurological disorders, including motor neurone disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Our mission is to translate cutting-edge research into novel therapeutic solutions that improve patient outcomes.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Clinical Research Fellow to join Professor Mary Reilly’s team, working on the Trial Readiness Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (TRANSFORM – CMT) project, funded by Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Key responsibilities include:

Supporting the development and optimisation of the quantitative calf muscle Fat Fraction MRI protocol, currently the most sensitive outcome measure in CMT.

  • Implementing technological advances in AI-assisted MRI acquisition and analysis for faster, more reliable data.
  • Recruiting and clinically evaluating patients at UCL and coordinating data collection with six other UK centres.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team including physicists, trial coordinators, data managers, geneticists, bioinformaticians, and clinicians.
  • Receiving comprehensive training in inherited neuropathies, clinical evaluation, outcome measures, MRI fat-fraction analysis, and genetic interpretation.
  • This position will also require an Honorary Clinical contract from UCLH NHS Trust, which includes a DBS check. The post is initially funded for one year (from 1 August 2026) with an expectation of extension for up to three years.

Candidate Requirements

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have completed CMT/IMT training and MRCP.
  • Possess clinical neurology experience and the ability to provide supervision.
  • Demonstrate understanding of research methodology and evidence of successful research under guidance.
  • Exhibit excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills, and the ability to work independently.
