About the Role

Great Ormond Street Hospital is seeking an experienced Clinical Psychologist to join the Psychology and Mental Health Service and work closely with the Louis Dundas Palliative Care Team.

The successful candidate will provide a specialist psychological service to children and young people receiving palliative care, as well as supporting their families. This will involve sophisticated psychological assessment, formulation and therapeutic intervention within a highly specialised paediatric healthcare environment.

The position is part of the Long Term Health Psychology Team and offers the opportunity to work alongside clinical psychologists and other psychosocial professionals across the Trust.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

– Deliver a high-quality specialist psychology service to children, young people and families supported by the Louis Dundas Palliative Care Team.
– Undertake complex psychological assessments and develop comprehensive formulations.
– Provide evidence-based psychological interventions tailored to individual clinical needs.
– Work closely with doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
– Offer psychological consultation and specialist advice to colleagues across the service.
– Facilitate staff debriefs, reflective practice and appropriate psychological support following distressing clinical experiences.
– Supervise newly qualified psychologists, assistant psychologists and other junior members of the psychology workforce.
– Provide supervision to qualified psychologists, trainees and other staff where appropriate.
– Contribute to the development and flexible delivery of psychology services in response to changing clinical and organisational priorities.
– Apply research and evaluation skills to clinical audit, service development, policy work and research activity.
– Represent psychological practice effectively within multidisciplinary meetings and wider Trust initiatives.

Essential Qualifications and Professional Registration

Applicants should have:

– Doctoral-level postgraduate training in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, or an equivalent qualification for psychologists trained before 1996, recognised by the BPS/HCPC.
– Relevant training covering clinical psychometrics, lifespan developmental psychology and eating disorders.
– HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.
– Evidence of post-doctoral development, continuing professional development and/or additional specialist psychological qualifications.
– Formal training in the supervision of psychologists.

Essential Experience and Knowledge

You will need to demonstrate:

– Specialist-level experience working as a qualified psychologist.
– Experience working with diverse client groups across the lifespan and with varying levels of clinical complexity.
– Clinical experience involving end-of-life care and bereavement.
– Specialist experience working with paediatric populations.
– Experience of teaching, training or delivering professional education.
– Experience of contributing psychological expertise within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
– Experience supervising qualified or trainee psychologists and/or other professionals.
– Knowledge of relevant legislation concerning children and young people, including safeguarding and child protection.
– Understanding of diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
– Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion issues within the workplace.
– Evidence of contributing to improvements in equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable Experience

The following would be advantageous:

– Experience working in a children’s or paediatric inpatient environment alongside a medical multidisciplinary team.
– Experience providing staff support through debriefing or reflective practice.
– Previous experience working directly within a paediatric palliative care service.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

– Advanced psychological assessment, formulation and intervention skills for complex clinical presentations.
– The ability to communicate sensitive and technically complex information clearly with children, young people, families, carers and professionals.
– Strong consultation skills when working with both professional and non-professional groups.
– The ability to recognise and promote appropriate psychological support for families, carers and staff exposed to distressing circumstances.
– Strong multidisciplinary working skills and a collaborative approach to patient care.
– The ability to remain professional and effective when working with highly emotional or challenging situations.
– Advanced therapeutic skills relevant to complex paediatric psychological presentations.
– The ability to prepare and deliver sophisticated multimedia presentations for clinical, professional and academic audiences.
