Role Overview

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, depending on experience. The successful candidate will also hold an honorary consultant appointment with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT).

A central aspect of the role is providing academic and clinical leadership for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), including acting as Clinical Director. The postholder will help shape the region’s oncology research landscape, strengthen partnerships with the Sussex Cancer Centre, and contribute to strategic development across both BSMS and UHSFT.

Senior clinical academics at Associate Professor and Professor level are expected to contribute significantly to research leadership, teaching innovation, strategic planning, and research income generation.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Clinical Trials

  • Lead an active and internationally recognised research programme in oncology.
  • Provide strategic and clinical leadership to the Brighton and Sussex CTU (2 PAs allocated).
  • Accelerate growth of the cancer clinical trials portfolio across Sussex, spanning solid tumours and haematological malignancies.
  • Mentor researchers and clinicians, fostering a culture of high-quality clinical and translational research.
  • Strengthen grant activity and contribute to sustainable research funding.

Teaching & Educational Leadership

  • Teach and supervise across undergraduate BMBS and postgraduate programmes.
  • Champion oncology education, support career development activities, and engage students in research.
  • Promote high-quality clinical placements, SSCs, and research project opportunities.
  • Hold leadership roles aligned with professorial expectations, contributing to School-level governance and strategy.

Clinical Duties

  • Hold a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant post within UHSFT’s Oncology Department.
  • Deliver specialist oncology care based on clinical expertise (Medical Oncology or Clinical Oncology).
  • Applicants must hold a CCT in Medical Oncology or Clinical Oncology or equivalent.

  • Commitment to high-quality teaching, mentorship, and academic leadership.
  • Eligibility for GMC registration and specialist accreditation.
