Job Description
About the Role
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, depending on career stage, with an honorary consultant contract at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT). The postholder will lead clinical trials, provide clinical leadership as Clinical Director for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), and collaborate with the Sussex Cancer Centre and the Health and Care Research Partnership.
Senior academic posts at Associate Professor level and above involve teaching, research, and leadership responsibilities, including strategic planning and management within the School and University. Grant applications and funding acquisition will be key components to support oncology research in Sussex. The post will support the development of a clinical academic oncology group within UHSFT and BSMS, with potential for additional linked posts.
BSMS currently has research strengths in global health/infection, mental health, and translational haemato-oncology. We aim to expand oncology research to include solid and haematological malignancies, and we welcome applications from candidates with expertise in either medical or clinical oncology. The postholder will also support the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC), a collaborative initiative across BSMS, University of Sussex, University of Brighton, and NHS Trusts in Sussex, focusing on interdisciplinary research to improve cancer treatments and outcomes.
About You
The successful candidate will:
Lead their own research programme and contribute to clinical trials.
Conduct research within the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine and provide leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Provide clinical leadership to the CTU (2 PAs associated) and mentor research-active academic and NHS colleagues.
Drive development of the cancer-focused trial portfolio, increasing research income and trial recruitment.
Support clinical trials across solid tumour malignancies (e.g., gynaecological, breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and skin cancers) as well as post-licensing and optimisation trials.
Contribute to teaching in medicine and/or surgery and support undergraduate student learning, including placements, Student Selected Components (SSCs), and 4th-year Individual Research Projects.
Engage with external organisations and networks to strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate training.
For Professorial candidates, there is an expectation of national and international leadership, exceptional performance in research, innovation, education, and formal School-level leadership roles.
The post includes a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant role at UHSFT in the Department of Oncology. Candidates must be Medical or Clinical Oncologists with completed specialist training and a CCT in their specialty.
