Job Description

About the Role

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking to appoint an outstanding Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, depending on experience, with an honorary consultant contract at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT).

The successful applicant will have a strong track record in clinical trials and will provide clinical leadership as Clinical Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). This role will involve close partnership working with the Sussex Cancer Centre (UHSFT) and the Health and Care Research Partnership.

As a senior clinical academic, you will play a key role in driving oncology research development within Sussex, including leading grant applications and securing external funding. You will also help establish a clinical academic oncology group at BSMS and within the Trust. A further linked Associate Professor role is planned, to be developed with your input.

BSMS currently has research strengths in global health and infection, mental health, and translational haemato-oncology. We are now looking to expand into other oncology areas, including both solid and haematological malignancies, and we welcome applicants from candidates in either medical or clinical oncology.

Our commitment to advancing cancer research is reflected in the success of the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC), which brings together colleagues from BSMS, the University of Sussex, the University of Brighton, and NHS Trusts across Sussex to deliver impactful, interdisciplinary research aimed at improving cancer treatments and outcomes.

About You

The successful candidate will lead an independent programme of research within the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine and provide clinical and research leadership across BSMS and UHSFT.

You will contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, mentor academic and NHS colleagues, and support the development of research-led teaching in oncology.

Key responsibilities include:

Providing clinical leadership for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (2 PAs allocated).

Supporting and expanding the cancer-focused clinical trials portfolio within Sussex.

Developing strategies to increase research income and trial recruitment.

Contributing to the BMBS undergraduate teaching programme, including placements, Student Selected Components (SSCs), and 4th-year Individual Research Projects.

Supporting student-led oncology activities and clinical career development.

Current trial activity within UHSFT includes translational haemato-oncology and a growing portfolio of trials across gynaecological, breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and skin cancers, as well as post-licensing and optimisation studies.

For appointment at Professorial level, you must demonstrate a sustained record of excellence in research, innovation, education, and leadership, with national and international recognition in your field. You will also undertake formal School-level leadership responsibilities appropriate to your expertise.

The post includes a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant role in the UHSFT Department of Oncology, within Clinical Cancer Services.
Applicants must hold a CCT in Medical Oncology or Clinical Oncology and be eligible for GMC specialist registration.
