Job Title: Audience Engagement Manager (Maternity Cover)
Department: The Hunterian

Salary: £33,232 – £36,924 per annum
Full-time, Fixed-Term (up to 12 months)

Position Overview
Reporting to the Audience Development Manager, the Audience Engagement Manager will play a pivotal role in planning, coordinating, and delivering a variety of audience development activities at The Hunterian. The role involves overseeing audience research, event management, volunteering, social media, marketing, and visitor engagement. You will be responsible for developing and implementing engagement programs that attract and connect diverse audiences, and you will manage activities from conception through to evaluation. A key aspect of the role will be fostering inclusive practices by working with both internal and external partners to design and implement community-led initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and Deliver Audience Engagement Programs
Lead the planning and execution of audience engagement initiatives that align with The Hunterian’s strategic objective of becoming “a more meaningful place for diverse audiences.” Collaborate with communities, colleagues, and audiences to foster connections with a broad spectrum of new and existing visitors.

Cultivate an Audience-Focused Culture
Support the development of an audience-centric mindset across the team, promoting skills-building and confidence to plan, engage, and assess audience experiences effectively.

Lead Audience Research and Analysis
Manage key aspects of The Hunterian’s audience research program, including consultation, data processing, analysis, and reporting. Use these insights to shape future audience engagement strategies and program design.

Promote and Communicate Engagement Activities
Oversee the promotion of audience development initiatives through various media channels. This includes drafting marketing materials, maintaining web pages, creating Eventbrite pages, writing press releases, and managing social media platforms.

Data Reporting and Evaluation
Collect, analyze, and report on data related to audience engagement, student participation, and events. Use this data to inform decision-making, improve public programming, and contribute to long-term planning.

Manage Volunteer Teams and Student Engagement
Supervise the recruitment, training, and management of volunteer teams, including the Hunterian Museum Student Educators Program. Ensure that volunteers are supported in their roles, and that data management complies with GDPR requirements. Also, assist with university course placements and deliver presentations as required.

Collaboration with University Partners
Work closely with other academic departments and University Services, including Alumni Relations, Archives and Special Collections, and Student Services, to maximize engagement opportunities.

Take responsibility for your own professional development by engaging in self-motivated learning and attending relevant training opportunities, while effectively managing your workload.

Essential Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Knowledge and Qualifications

A1 Demonstrable experience or relevant qualifications (e.g., Higher National Diploma, Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 4, or equivalent) in a related field with proven personal development in a similar role.

A2 Experience in event management and planning for different scales and audiences.

A3 Knowledge of audience development practices in cultural settings.

A4 Familiarity with health and safety policies and procedures relevant to the role.

A5 Understanding of best practices in diversity, inclusion, and addressing cultural equalities within cultural or heritage contexts.

Desirable

B1 Knowledge of the cultural sector and current issues in cultural venues and programming.

B2 Experience in audience research and segmentation.

B3 Working knowledge of GDPR.

B4 Interest or knowledge of contemporary art.

Skills

C1 Strong interpersonal, written, and communication skills to engage with diverse audiences and stakeholders.

C2 Proficiency in office IT applications, including databases, Excel, MS Teams, and other Office tools.

C3 Advanced social media skills, including content creation and scheduling on various platforms.

C4 Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities, with a capacity to prioritize and meet deadlines.

C5 Ability to work independently, resolve problems, and demonstrate initiative under pressure.

C6 Strong attention to detail and ability to create compelling promotional materials with excellent proofreading skills.

Terms and Conditions

Salary: £33,232 – £36,924 per annum.

Contract: Full-time, fixed-term (up to 12 months or until the return of the substantive postholder).
