Job Overview
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join its Rehabilitation Service. This substantive role offers a unique opportunity to work across Willow Ward (inpatient rehabilitation) and the developing Open Mental Health Rehabilitation Team, delivered in collaboration with voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) partners.
The role combines inpatient and community rehabilitation psychiatry, with a strong focus on service development, innovation, and integrated care delivery.
- Â Working Pattern: Flexible (including potential 4-day full-time working)
Flexibility: Partial remote working supported
On-call: Optional participation in 1:11 senior rota
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership across Willow Ward and the Open Mental Health Rehabilitation Team.
Manage a mixed caseload of inpatients and community-based service users with complex mental health needs.
Lead service development and contribute to the expansion of rehabilitation services.
Act as Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients under the Mental Health Act where appropriate.
Deliver specialist psychiatric assessments, treatment planning, and risk management.
Provide consultation and liaison support to partner services and external agencies.
Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration and decision-making.
Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
Service Description
Willow Ward is an 11-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit providing specialist care for adults with severe and enduring mental health conditions. Many patients present with:
- Complex comorbid mental health conditions
Neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism, ADHD)
Substance misuse issues
Physical health conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease)
The service supports both detained and voluntary patients, offering comprehensive rehabilitation and recovery-focused care.
The Open Mental Health Rehabilitation Team provides community-based support, working closely with primary care, voluntary services, and specialist teams to deliver holistic, patient-centred care pathways.

Essential Qualifications
- Medical degree and MRCPsych (or equivalent)
Full registration with the General Medical Council
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (via CCT or equivalent)
Section 12(2) approval (or willingness to obtain)
Experience & Skills
- Extensive experience in psychiatry, particularly rehabilitation or complex care
Ability to manage complex cases independently
Strong leadership and service development skills
Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care
Excellent communication and multidisciplinary collaboration abilities
