Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the South Somerset Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in Yeovil. You will be part of a team of three community consultants covering Yeovil East, Yeovil West, and Chard, supported by an experienced Associate Specialist.

This role focuses on delivering senior psychiatric leadership within the Yeovil West CMHT, serving a GP population of approximately 45,000 patients. The service operates a functional split between community and inpatient care, ensuring manageable caseloads aligned with best practice standards.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
On-call: Optional participation in a 1:11 senior out-of-hours rota

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert psychiatric assessment and management for adults with complex mental health needs.
    Manage a caseload including severe mental illness (SMI), ADHD with comorbidities, and complex diagnostic cases.
    Review and triage referrals through a structured single point of access system.
    Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (MDT) to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care.
    Participate in clinical leadership, service development, and governance activities.
    Support risk management, care planning, and treatment pathways.
    Optionally contribute to out-of-hours on-call rota covering inpatient services.

Service Structure

The CMHT operates within a comprehensive mental health system, working closely with:

  • Assertive Outreach Team (AOT)
    Early Psychosis (STEP) Service
    Home Treatment Team
    Open Mental Health (OMH) Service
    Connect 18 transitional service

The team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, and other specialists, ensuring holistic and integrated care delivery.

Essential Qualifications

  • MBBS (or equivalent medical qualification)
    Full registration with the General Medical Council
    MRCPsych qualification
    Entry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
    Section 12 approval and/or Approved Clinician status

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years’ higher specialist training (ST4–ST6 or equivalent)
    Experience in adult community psychiatry
    Expertise in managing complex mental health conditions, including ADHD
    Ability to work independently and lead multidisciplinary teams
    Strong clinical governance and risk management knowledge
    Effective communication and leadership skills
