About the Opportunity
Birkbeck, University of London is seeking a Senior Lecturer in Cybersecurity to join its School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences on a permanent, full-time basis.
Located in London’s Bloomsbury district, the School is known for combining high-quality teaching with impactful research. With the recent launch of a new undergraduate Cybersecurity programme—and plans to expand into postgraduate study—this role offers a chance to shape the future direction of the discipline within the institution.

About the School
The School delivers a diverse range of programmes in Computer Science, Data Science, and Mathematics. Research activity is centred around three key themes:
- Algorithms and Discrete Mathematics
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
Logical and Formal Methods
Cybersecurity is an expanding priority area, and this role will play a central part in strengthening both teaching and research capacity.
Your Role
This is a balanced academic position involving teaching, research, and leadership responsibilities.
Teaching & Student Engagement
- Deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials across undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Develop innovative and engaging teaching materials
Supervise student dissertations and research projects
Academic Leadership
- Take responsibility for module leadership and curriculum development
Support programme design, particularly within Cybersecurity
Contribute to academic administration and school governance
Research & Scholarship
- Maintain an active and internationally recognised research profile
Publish in leading journals and contribute to research impact
Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines
Engagement & Outreach
- Participate in public engagement and knowledge exchange activities
Contribute to widening participation and student success initiatives
What We’re Looking For
You’ll be a strong candidate if you bring:
- A PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field
A well-established research track record in Cybersecurity
Experience teaching at university level, including module leadership
Strong understanding of teaching methods relevant to computing disciplines
Experience in academic administration or leadership roles
Excellent communication and presentation skills
A genuine commitment to diversity, inclusion, and student support
Salary & Benefits
- Salary: £64,290 – £71,792 per annum (including London weighting)
